Dog Days Of August: Poetry Interlude

'Making My Day'

Belinda Stronach takes a desultory stroll
Across the hallway
Into the sinecure-laden den,
Making her day.

M.Jean stops her media career
In mid-flight sanctimony,
To be a Governor General
Full of patriotic androgyny.

Mysteries? No.
Just statist adjustments.
Like in the Sun King's court,
Courtiers maneuver, some ascend.

The Governor General Award

Canada's official story grows,
Like Five-Year Plans from Moscow, or Havana.
Potemkin condescension rules.

The mainstay is progressive superiority,
Calmly telling us: September 11's terrorist mass murders were predictable,
Only by the enlightened, of course.

Where are the Freedom Fighters?
Drawing room warriors only
Prosper in Ottawa.
